Selling DIY Cosmetics?

If you're starting a business selling your homemade cosmetics, here are some tips that you should definitely keep in mind with production.

  1. Follow GMP Guidelines

When starting out, not all businesses will have the financial means to send their formulas to contract manufacturers to produce. To ensure the cleanliness and stability of your handmade cosmetics, it's always best to follow the Good Manufacturing Practice Regulations(GMP). This is a regulation administered by the US Food and Drug Administration that details practices and environmental cleanliness when making products.

In the wake of the COVID-19 Pandemic, it's always assuring to know the cosmetics you buy come from clean sources. Following these regulations will lessen the risks of bacteria growing within your products.

2. Correctly Label Your Products

All cosmetic distribution needs to be correctly labeled under the FDA. It is important that all labels are visible within the actual product or packaging. Some things to include are:

  1. International Nomenclature Cosmetic Ingredient (INCI)

  2. Weight of product or net quantity

  3. What the product is (EX- lipstick, moisturizer, eyeshadow, etc)

Here's a video by YouTuber, Tara Lee showing how you to legal label cosmetics.

3. Be Transparent

One thing that I noticed in small businesses is the amount of misinformation with their products. For example, I've come across a shop that labeled one of their products as vegan, despite having listed "carmine" in their lipstick. Carmine is sourced from crushed cochineal bugs which is NOT vegan. It is important to be transparent and not mislabel your products as it can cause a lot of distrust between your customer and business.

I hope these tips help! Please comment if you have any questions and if you liked this post, please give it a <3!
